Douglas Raymond
Buchanan
August 29, 1936 – April 6, 2026
Douglas Raymond Buchanan, 89 passed away peacefully in St. George, Utah, on April 6, 2026.
Douglas was born on August 29, 1936, in Pollock, Idaho, to Edna Wuenschel and George Wenzel Buchanan.
Growing up along the Salmon River, he held many fond memories of exploring the outdoors with his siblings. The family later moved to Salt Lake City, where Doug became an all‑star baseball player at Granite High School. His love of sports continued throughout his life—he had an extraordinary memory for sports statistics and history.
Doug possessed a natural gift for precise, steady penmanship, which led him into a lifelong career in drafting and calligraphy. His artistic skill remained a source of pride and joy long after his retirement.
In Salt Lake City, Doug met the love of his life, Sylvia Eichelberger. They married in 1958 and soon welcomed their first two children, Carrie and Barry. Work opportunities took the young family across the United States during their early years together. They eventually settled in Houston, Texas for 10 years where Doug worked for a civil engineering firm and where their third and fourth children, Brett and Sean, were born.
Doug and Sylvia longed to return to the place where their story began, and in 1977 they moved back to Utah, building a home in Sandy with a beautiful view of the Wasatch Mountains. Doug continued his drafting career in Salt Lake City, and after retiring, he devoted himself to perfecting his calligraphy.
Not long after moving to Salt Lake City in 1979, basketball burst onto the scene with the arrival of a new team, The Utah Jazz, from that moment on, Doug became their number‑one fan. He followed them faithfully for the rest of his life and could talk about basketball with anyone who would listen.
A devout Christian, Doug raised his family with the teachings of the Bible. He had a deep passion for military history and built an extensive library of Civil War and World War volumes. Humor was a cherished part of family life, and Doug instilled in his children the importance of laughter. He was also an avid golfer who enjoyed time on the course whenever he could.
Doug and Sylvia moved to St. George, Utah, in 2025, where they spent their final chapter together surrounded by the warmth and beauty of southern Utah.
Douglas was a deeply kind person who never hesitated to remind us how much he loved us. His honesty was unwavering, and he lived his life guided by an impeccable code of ethics.
Douglas passed away 4 days after his beloved wife Sylvia; he could not live in a world without her.
Doug is survived by his four children Carrie (Miller) Barry, Brett and Sean. Three Grandchildren Erin, Kelley, and April, 10 Great-Grandchildren Quentin, Isabel, Rowan, Eden, London, Aaliyah, Drayson, Markel, Lyric and Ashton
Douglas leaves behind a legacy of integrity, devotion, and quiet strength. His life was shaped by deep love for his family, a steadfast faith, and a passion for the crafts and interests that brought him joy. His gentle humor, unwavering honesty, and the love he shared so freely will continue to guide and inspire all who knew him.
