On May 22, 2025, at 92 years young, Jerry Douglas Lundberg crossed the finish line of life with the same courage and happy nature with which he was born. Jerry arrived in this world a whopping 12 lbs. on March 7, 1933, to Reynold and Dougline Lundberg in Salt Lake City, UT. He was the oldest of 4 children (Sally, David, and Ron).
A giant of a man, both in stature and spirit, Jerry excelled in athletics from a young age. After winning multiple basketball championships as a teenager, Jerry showcased his athleticism and competitive nature playing football and boxing at Brigham Young University in 1952 (see BYU Profile). In 1953, during his national service, the commanding officers discovered his boxing prowess, and he was assigned to serve as US Army boxer. He never lost a fight.
In 1954, he met Barbara June Packard and was smitten from the very first date. They were married on September 6, 1954, in Pocatello, Idaho. They welcomed their one and only child, Kris Ann, on December 17, 1955. She was daddy’s girl from the minute they laid her in his big, strong hands. Jerry and Barbara were sealed in the St. George, UT temple on October 23, 2015.
Jerry spent his whole 60 year career in trucking. Beginning as a dock hand and as a driver, he quickly worked his way into management, managing terminals in Provo, Idaho, Montana, and Los Angeles. At the height of his career, he purchased Sterling Transit Company, one of the largest intrastate trucking companies in California, known as one of the “Dirty 13.” He became a prominent figure in the trucking industry, and his bold leadership garnered the respect and admiration of his peers. This powerful influence led to his being elected President of the California Trucking Association, where he tirelessly advocated for the interests of his fellow truckers and worked to improve the industry as a whole.
Throughout his life, Jerry's generosity knew no bounds. His humble beginnings made him acutely aware of the hardships of others, and he gave freely of his bounty. His kind heart and positive attitude inspired all who knew him, reminding them that life’s challenges could be faced with love, gratitude, resilience, and a cheerful heart.
Jerry and Barbara spend the majority of their retirement years living and golfing in Palm Springs, CA, but their longing to be closer to family drew them back to Utah. For over 10 years, Jerry lovingly cared for his sweetheart full-time, as she progressed through the various stages of dementia. His devotion to Barbara during this time was a tribute to his love for her. His heart was especially heavy following Barbara’s passing in April 2024, but now they are WHOLE and together again.
As we remember Jerry Douglas Lundberg, we celebrate a life filled with love, faith, loyalty, generosity, and dedication. His legacy will live on in the hearts of his family, who saw a man who loved big, lived large, and operated on his own terms.
He is survived by his daughter Kris Ann Young [William Sidney], six grandchildren, 27 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild.
