Sue Ellen (Yeater) Stewart, age 78, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully at her home in St. George, Utah, in the early morning hours of July 13, 2026, surrounded by the love of her family. She was born on July 25, 1947, in Logansport, Indiana, to Harold and Eva Yeater, who preceded her in death. She lived a life marked by kindness, devotion, and unwavering love for those around her.

Sue is survived by her devoted husband, Gayle Burke Stewart, with whom she shared a lifetime of love and cherished memories. She also leaves behind her two daughters, Keri (Stewart) Hyde and her husband, Spencer Hyde, and Ashlee (Stewart) Derbidge and her husband, Brint Derbidge.

Nothing brought Sue greater joy than her family, especially her four grandchildren: Cortnee Miller, Noah Hyde, Olivia Hyde, and Talon Stewart Derbidge. She treasured each of them and took great pride in watching them grow, celebrating their accomplishments, and creating lasting memories together.

Sue will be remembered for her generous heart and the love she so freely gave to her family and friends. Her home was a place of warmth, comfort, and welcome. She devoted her life to her family as a loving homemaker, creating a home filled with love, faith, and compassion for her husband and daughters. She faithfully served in many callings in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was always willing to lend a helping hand to neighbors, ward members, friends, and anyone in need. She leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and family that will continue to inspire those who were blessed to know her.

Sue will also be remembered for her confidence, independence, and joyful spirit. As the only child of Harold and Eva Yeater, she developed a sense of courage and self-reliance that stayed with her throughout her life. As a young woman, she bravely left her parents' home in Illinois to attend Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho. It was there that she was baptized as a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, a decision that shaped the rest of her life.

Sue later continued her education at Brigham Young University, where she earned a bachelor's degree in education. After completing her student teaching, she realized that teaching was not the path she was meant to follow. Soon after graduation, she accepted a position as Gayle Stewart's secretary. What began as a professional relationship soon blossomed into friendship and then into love. They were married soon after and built a beautiful life together centered on faith and family.

When Sue's father, Harold, passed away, she and Gayle lovingly welcomed her mother, Eva, into their home. They built a comfortable apartment in their basement where Eva lived for many years, surrounded by the love and support of her family. Those years became a treasured time for everyone, especially Sue's two daughters, who formed close and lasting bonds with their grandmother.

Sue had an adventurous spirit and a love of travel. One of her favorite stories was packing up her two daughters, her best friend, hitching a trailer to the family van, and driving across the country to visit family and friends in her hometown of Logansport, Indiana. She treasured the memories she made exploring Europe and Ireland, and in later years she and Gayle especially enjoyed taking cruises together. Earlier in their marriage, they loved taking family camping trips in their trailer to Crystal Springs, California, Florida, her hometown in Indiana, and countless weekends spent at KOA campgrounds.

Those who knew Sue also knew she was never shy about breaking into song. Whether at home, in the car, or surrounded by loved ones, she sang with enthusiasm, confidence, and a joy that could fill a room. She also had a flair for fashion and loved shopping for clothes and purses. Her collection of handbags became something of a family joke—she had so many that no one could quite keep count.

In quieter moments, Sue found some of her greatest happiness beside her beloved swimming pool, where countless hours were spent laughing, visiting, and making treasured memories with family and friends. It was one of her favorite places to gather the people she loved most.

Though her presence will be deeply missed, she leaves a lasting impression on everyone who knew her. She had a remarkable gift for making people feel welcome, cared for, and loved. Her example of faith, strength, generosity, and unconditional love will continue to live on through the family she cherished so deeply.

A viewing and funeral service will be held at McArthur Funeral Home, 160 West 700 South, St. George, Utah, 84770 on July 27, 2026, at 10:00 am followed by a luncheon at the church, 1762 South River Road, St. George, Utah, 84790.

The graveside service and burial will be held in the Fairview, Utah cemetery on July 28, 2026. Those wishing to honor Sue's memory with flowers may do so using the floral link available on the McArthur Funeral Home website.
